The iPod touch generation – Apple 2.0 – Fortune Brainstorm Tech

Is Apple’s iPhone-without-a-phone the McDonald’s Happy Meal of mobile communications?

Peter Farago of the mobile analytics firm Flurry uses data from its November report to make the case that Apple (AAPL) is quietly — and successfully — using the iPod touch to lock in a loyal base of under-age users who will eventually become the next generation of iPhone buyers.

“While it is clear that the iPhone has significant short-term revenue value for Apple,” he writes in a report issued Sunday, “Flurry believes that the iPod Touch holds more long-term strategic value for Steve Jobs and team.”

“In terms of Life Stage Marketing,” Farago writes, “the practice of appealing to different age-based segments, Apple is using the iPod Touch to build loyalty with pre-teens and teens, even before they have their own phones (think: McDonalds’ Happy Meal marketing strategy). When today’s young iPod Touch users age by five years, they will already have iTunes accounts, saved personal contacts to their iPod Touch devices, purchased hundreds of apps and songs, and mastered the iPhone OS user interface.” (link)

The evidence that Apple’s strategy is working, Farago says, can be seen in a graph of end-user sessions recorded over the past six months.

Flurry, according to Farago, tracks 15 million end-user sessions every day from its “analytics solution” code embedded in 3,000 applications on 4 platforms: Apple’s iPhone OS ( both iPhone and iPod Touch), Research in Motion’s (RIMM) Blackberry, JavaME and Google (GOOG) Android.

The graph above shows that the iPod touch’s share of those user sessions has grown 4 points over the past six months — the same as Android despite starting from a much larger user base. While the iPhone continues to grow in user sessions, its share in Flurry’s data has dropped from 57% to 50%.

Even more significant, according to Farago, is that kind of things the kids are doing with their iPod touches.

“Anecdotally,” he writes, “we know the ‘iPod Touch Generation’ is made up of heavy MySpace, Facebook and SMS users, who voraciously share their lives with, and influence their ever-expanding social graph. Importantly, this also includes promoting products they like. Empirically, Flurry compared how iPod Touch session usage has changed over the last six months across key application categories important to this demographic; namely, Social Networking and Games.”

Farago’s empirical evidence is displayed in the two charts below, which show the iPod Touch growing faster than both the iPhone and the Android devices in Flurry’s Social Networking and Games categories.

Here is a little experiment – how would you describe your blog in 120 characters or less?

Now, here is the reasoning behind this experiment – Twitter!

Twitter is forcing people to become more succinct in their communication habits given all you have is 140 characters to post about yourself or to carry on a conversation.

Lets take it one more step – within Twitter you have a concept of a Retweet. The significance here is lets say you would like to publish a piece of content and hope it becomes ‘viral’ in your community. You need to post with less than 120 characters so people can repost your thoughts to their community while still giving credit to you.

Here is the crux of this little experiment — > ‘pitch’ your community on why we should read your blog.

Here’s how it’ll work:

Over the next 5 days use the comment section of this post open for you to give an elevator pitch for your blog.
To keep the ‘pitches’ short – you have to do it in 120 characters or less.
Keep it family friendly please so no porn, no mlm, and no garbage.
Sell your blog to us in any way you like as long as it’s 120 characters. Use humor, tell us what it’s about, tease us… what ever you want.
Feel free to use your blog’s name in the ‘name’ field in the comments section and to leave the URL in the URL section to help you save on characters.
Please only pitch one blog to us. If you have multiple blogs just pick your best one.
After the weekend, I’ll close the comments on this post
There will be no summary list of all blogs submitted. However, a few of my examples of your pitches will be highlighted in the 2nd post.

An Iraqi journalist flung his shoes at Dubya as he addressed a news conference in Baghdad — “”This is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog” reporter Muntadhar al-Zaidi yelled as he hurled the footwear.

Throwing shoes at somebody is a supreme insult in the Middle East. Iraqis whacked a statue of Saddam Hussein with their shoes after U.S. Marines toppled it to the ground following the 2003 invasion.

It’s
an outstanding video to watch, Dubya ducks as one shoe whizzed over the president’s head and comes up with that stupid grin on
his face, then ducks again and bobs back up ready for a third shot. As much as I
dislike him, I thought he handled it very well, especially his jokes about it.
Too bad the message doesn’t sink in though since it’s not a laughing matter. At
least we’re rid of him soon.

“I don’t think you can take one guy throwing shoes and say this represents a broad movement in Iraq,” he said. “You can try to do that if you want to. I don’t think it would be accurate.”

“It was a size 10″ , “So what if a guy threw his shoe at me?” , “I don’t know what the guy said, but I saw his sole,” he joked.

Ok, I thought it was a misprint when I saw this on Sports Illustrated today — Slovakia women’s hockey team won their Olympic qualifier 82 – 0 over Bulgaria.

Bulgaria was eliminated from Olympic consideration after scoring one goal and conceding 192 in the tournament.

How a team could score more goals than minutes in the game is beyond me.

Obama VP watch….

So as we all wait to see if Obama will end up using Twitter to announce his VP running mate or just use traditional SMS – either way the news will hit twitter faster than a web newbie can figure out how to spell the microblog services name.

Sens. Evan Bayh of Indiana, Joe Biden of Delaware, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine and Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius are among those who have been widely reported to be on Obama’s final shortlist.

The dudgereport.com is reporting a company in Kansas City has been busy printing Obama/Bayh bumper stickers. Interesting to see old school reporting skills are being still used today!

Here is a good Wired.com blog posting featuring Bidden’s profile and him as VP candidate — Hollywood friendliness given his pro-IP ownership stance. He does cite Canada as a leader in global privacy of IP – yes, right up there with Russia and China. Obviously, he hasn’t tried to download content using Bell’s throttled internet service. HA
